We, as any living being are used and excel in creating patterns,
work pattern, walk pattern, observation pattern etc...
but when working in military or security - patterns can create problems.
more often than not to those who make these patterns their habbit,
I'll explain
there was this one time I went on a bunker clearing mission
up until now the plan was simple and worked in our favor:
- approach the AO (Area of Operations)
- clear any opposition
- enter the underground facility (which has identical design)
- Keal the baddies and take/break their toys
- Save the ladies
- profit!
now let's dissect this into patterns:
the first one would be the opposition, in the overwhelming majority of cases the only thing that stands between you and the facility was a turret, or a couple of them.
in the rarest extreme rare situations you happened to stumble upon another player or group thereof that happens to be in the same bunker doing some other crap (possibly doing the opposite of what you're supposed to do there [insert "You working" scene from JW-2]
- so you destroy the turret without coming out of a ship or not - (depending on if it's friendly or possibly already destroyed) and move on with the task
second would be the design consideration - the entrance is in the same side, the facility is in the same overall layout with boxes and stages shifting places from 1 to 2 literally (yep, first story can become second, and box can move from x to y in a familiar spot)
- so your mental map never changes and you know what is where
well, guess what - patches moved and updated for quite some, we established those patterns in almost every citizen's mind and only few devoted deciples, kids and elders with plenty of free time on their hands have noticed the subtle changes and adjusted accordingly
Most of us are to busy with real life and too frustrated with the state of the game that in some cases we just put it on a shelf until better days - let it age some more
but now 3.23 came along aaaaand - it's a shit show
alright, 3.23.1 - no - still shit
ok how about 3.23.4
? - dude, srsly
ok ok, fuck.... 3.24! - aww, wtf?! I mean, it loks good but why does it behave like a retarted offspring of the other 3 patches before it?
*rolls eyes* fine, here...
enter 3.24.1
stable, all the new tech from the previous patches with a more polished and most importantly FUNCTIONING (even if partially) gameplay and proper fighting AI
and this is where our pattern gets tossed out the airlock...
so here I was decending towards a bunker - like I usually would on a new patch - did a show of force approach by circling the area to make sure nothing's shooting me out of the sky and looking for a landing.
happened to have a nice landing area about 40 meters from the entrance, got my handgun at the ready, checked for meds and there I was lowering the ramp to make my way in.
on my way in, I stumble upon what seems to be a silhouette (<f**k this word) of a person, I freeze - take aim and zoom into that silhouette - and holy s**t it is a bad guy, just chillin' there, having a Smoke or something... so I take aim and i notice lights start popping around him - there are other dudes, and they spotted me, We're compromised!
I started my journey in this game back in 2016, and we heard and saw the progression of AI and NPCs roaming the surfaces but only in certain spots and not the UGF, (UnderGround facilities) that pattern was established and been maintained for generations - it feels like... boy, was I in for a Nasty Suprise.
they opened fire, all of those who saw me and those who weren't started working their way around, flanking and communicating towards my lonesome sorry arse, so I keep running and dodging their fire (while screaming like a lil'-bitch I was in that moment) and trying my best to count my shots since i forgot my ammo bag [insert ammo bag scene from deadpool]
and so there I was, laying face in the dirt, with bullet holes all over my corpse, drowning in my own blood and manure, no regeneration, no support to pick me up, and one single shot in the handgun... humbled and humiliated, there was only one way out of this.
[insert *Bang* and lights-out]
This, was amazeballs, and perhaps the most refreshing experience Star-Citizen delivered in years! they stated multiple times they had worked on AI, they made them combat effective, they created communications and squad patterns for CQB that AI now works with and we pressed X for doubt every time because we saw none of it, either they were brain-dead or the server state made them dead - until now...
To summerize, here are the tips and tricks to learn from this experience:
Be prepared!
You're now entering a hostile territory from the moment you leave the ship, be aware of your surroundings, and if you have friends - watch each other's backs [insert "watch those corners" from COD MW1 - crew expandible mission] expect enemies waiting with an axe right by the airlock...Get them medpens and stack up on ammo, AI are ruthless now and willfuck your mom HARD push your miserable ass back to that airlock you crawled from.
so whether you're a merc, a medic, a security professional, a UPS courier or a concerned citizen - keep an eye out for your patterns, don't be scared to break or change them as long as it benefits you and do your best to stay alive, there are only so many times you can Regenerate before you Degenerate and i'll see you in the 'verse
